What is a WPS and why do I need one?

If you’ve ever heard the terms WPS and PQR and wondered what they actually mean, here’s the simple way I explain it 👇
A WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) is basically the recipe. It tells the welder exactly how to carry out the weld — what process to use, materials, temperatures, amps, technique, everything.
A PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) is the proof that the recipe works. It’s where that WPS has been tested in real conditions, then destructively and/or non-destructively tested to make sure it produces a sound weld.
👉 No guesswork. No assumptions. Just proven results.
So why do we need them?
Because in high-integrity work, “it looks alright” isn’t good enough. You need documented evidence that the weld will perform as required — every time.
Think of it like this:
- WPS = the recipe
- PQR = testing the recipe before serving it
No PQR? Then your recipe hasn’t been proven.
Simple as that.
So what happens if your business is welding without a recipe (no WPS/PQR)?
Short answer… you’re taking a risk every single time you strike an arc.
Here’s what that really means 👇
❌ Inconsistent weld quality
Every welder might do it slightly differently. What works one day might fail the next.
❌ No proof of compliance
If a client, inspector, or auditor asks for your procedures… you’ve got nothing to show.
❌ Failed inspections & rejected work
Even if the weld looks good, without a qualified procedure it can be rejected instantly.
❌ Increased liability
If something fails, you’ve got no documented evidence to protect your business.
❌ Lost contracts
Most serious clients won’t even consider you without qualified procedures in place.
❌ Safety risks
Unproven welds in critical applications can lead to real-world failures — and that’s where it gets serious.
👉 At the end of the day, a WPS and PQR aren’t paperwork for the sake of it… they’re protection.
Think of it like running a kitchen:
No recipe = inconsistent food
No testing = you don’t know if it’s safe to serve
In welding, that can cost you money, reputation… or worse.
